“God chose us in Christ before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before him in love.” Ephesians 1:4

Baptism is one of the two sacraments of the Presbyterian Church. As an individual is baptized, the community of faith unites in their promise to nurture that person as he or she walks in Christ.

Children or Adults

Both children and adults are recipients of this covenant and can be baptized.

An adult’s or older youth’s baptism is a profession of faith.

When parents (normally church members) present their infant or young child for baptism, the congregation promises to nurture that child in his or her faith.

We believe in one baptism and the church universal. If your walk with Christ began at another church where you were baptized in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, First Presbyterians (and all PC(USA) churches) recognize that baptism.

If you wish to be baptized or have your child baptized, please speak with our pastor. Baptisms take place during our normal worship service and can be held during our “Time with Children.”

What the PC(USA) says about Baptism

Baptism distinguishes children of those who believe in God’s redemptive power from children of nonbelievers. The water symbolizes three accounts from the Bible’s Old Testament: the waters of creation, the flood described in the story of Noah, and the Hebrews’ escape from slavery in Egypt by crossing the Red Sea. All three stories link humanity to God’s goodness through water.

Baptism signifies:

The faithfulness of God
The washing away of sin
Rebirth
Putting on the fresh garment of Christ.
Being sealed by God’s Spirit
Adoption into the covenant family of the Church
Resurrection and illumination in Christ
